Description

Veronica ‘Purple Leia’ PP34278

‘Purple Leia’ Spike Speedwell

‘Purple Leia’ joins popular companions ‘Blue Skywalker’ and ‘Lavender Lightsaber’ except with rosy- purple flowers covering the top half of a columnar, upright habit. Try this perennial in narrow spaces needing height, such as small city gardens or narrow borders. Veronica is highly valued for its ease of growth and long bloom time. The spiky flowers are an excellent contrast to the more common rounded flower shapes like Shasta Daisies, Coneflower, and Black Eyed Susans. Expect bees to be buzzing about this plant when in bloom.

Asclepias tuberosa Butterfly Weed USDA Zone: 4-9 A native North American wildflower, this is the primary source of food for the both the adult and juvenile Monarch Butterfly and is often included in butterfly gardens. Plants form an upright clump of narrow green leaves, bearing showy clusters of orange or gold flowers in mid to late summer. The seed pods that follow are used in dried arrangements and should be picked and dried while still green. Very late to come up in the spring, so mark the spot by planting daffodils or other companion bulbs. Needs well-drained sandy soil. CAUTION: Harmful if eaten. Plants make a bushy, upright clump with a profuse display of brown-eyed, golden-orange daisies from midsummer through the fall. Seedheads have good winter interest. A terrific choice for mass planting, combining especially well with ornamental grasses. Excellent for cutting. Removing faded flowers regularly will greatly increase the blooming time. Plants may be easily divided in early spring. Attractive to butterflies. A former Perennial Plant of the Year in 1999. This selection produces very large, single flowers with overlapping orange petals surrounding a large, rust-brown cone. Ideal for sunny borders and growing in mixed containers. Attractive to butterflies. Excellent for cutting. Coneflowers begin blooming midsummer and continue for months if faded flowers are regularly removed. However, keeping some dried flower heads on the plants in fall will provide food for wintering song birds. Dried seed heads also add interest to the winter garden. They form stately spires of flowers in early summer, over a mound of deeply cut green leaves. This selection features tall spires of vivid blue, semi-double flowers each with a white bee or center. Excellent for cutting. Trim back spent stems to the base to encourage repeat bloom later in the autumn. Be on the watch for aphids, slugs and powdery mildew, all common problems with Delphiniums. Staking the individual flower stems in June as they begin to elongate is wise, to help avoid wind damage. This outstanding variety forms a low clump of grassy blue-grey foliage, with a long summer display of fragrant single magenta-pink blooms. Shear plants back lightly after blooming to maintain a tight, compact habit. Plants require good drainage and are an excellent choice for hot dry sites or gravelly soils. Combines beautifully with other low alpine plants. Attractive to butterflies. Evergreen. Selected as the 2006 PERENNIAL PLANT of the YEAR.
