Leucanthemum × superbum ‘Snowcap’ Shasta Daisy USDA Zone: 4-9 (Formerly Chrysanthemum maximum) No sunny border would seem complete without the familiar presence of Shasta Daisies. This is an especially compact selection, with masses of single white flowers, each with a yellow center. Excellent for cutting. Also great for edging, or in mixed containers. Removing faded flowers will greatly increase the blooming time. Divide plants in the spring every 2 to 3 years to maintain vigour. Shasta Daisy is a well-behaved garden hybrid and should not be confused with the weedy Ox-eye Daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare). This selection is medium to tall, with flowers of deep violet-blue held on unusually dark stems. Remove faded blooms to encourage repeat flowering. Excellent for cutting. Drought tolerant once established. Also tolerates heat and humidity. Plants may be easily divided in early spring or fall. Can be clipped back hard after blooming, to rejuvenate the foliage. Attractive to both butterflies and hummingbirds. Winner of the 2000 Outstanding New Perennial Award by the International Hardy Plant Union. Plants make a bushy, upright clump with a profuse display of brown-eyed, golden-orange daisies from midsummer through the fall. Seedheads have good winter interest. A terrific choice for mass planting, combining especially well with ornamental grasses. Excellent for cutting. Removing faded flowers regularly will greatly increase the blooming time. Plants may be easily divided in early spring. Attractive to butterflies. A former Perennial Plant of the Year in 1999. This midsized selection has full plumes of deep cherry red, over a bushy mound of elegant, lacy green leaves. Also thrives in tubs or mixed containers. Fertilize in April and June. Excellent for cutting. Seed heads may be removed or left on the plant for winter interest. Plants should be divided every 2 to 3 years, in early spring. May tolerate full sun in cool summer regions. Starting in mid-spring shortly after Hellebores are finished booming, dainty light periwinkle blue flowers cover a low, mounded habit. After the flowers fade, you can enjoy its dark green leaves that are lightly sprinkled with silver. This plant will thrive in part shade to full shade as long as you provide moisture. Pulmonaria is an underused perennial that grows well in shady gardens. It is especially attractive when planted among hostas, ferns, and brunneras. Its flowers are among the most brilliantly colored blossoms of all perennials.
