They form stately spires of flowers in early summer, over a mound of deeply cut green leaves. This selection features tall spires of vivid blue, semi-double flowers each with a white bee or center. Excellent for cutting. Trim back spent stems to the base to encourage repeat bloom later in the autumn. Be on the watch for aphids, slugs and powdery mildew, all common problems with Delphiniums. Staking the individual flower stems in June as they begin to elongate is wise, to help avoid wind damage. This selection blooms profusely even in the first year, forming a low, compact mound. large, crimson-red daisies, some with yellow tips, appearing from June into the autumn. Removing faded flowers will encourage constant blooming. Sister color to G. ‘Arizona Sun’, the All-America Selections and Fleuroselect Gold Medal winner. This outstanding variety forms a low clump of grassy blue-grey foliage, with a long summer display of fragrant single magenta-pink blooms. Shear plants back lightly after blooming to maintain a tight, compact habit. Plants require good drainage and are an excellent choice for hot dry sites or gravelly soils. Combines beautifully with other low alpine plants. Attractive to butterflies. Evergreen. Selected as the 2006 PERENNIAL PLANT of the YEAR. This selection produces very large, single flowers with hot, orange-red overlapping petals surrounding a large brown cone. Ideal for sunny borders and growing in mixed containers. Attractive to butterflies. Excellent for cutting. Coneflowers begin blooming midsummer and continue for months if faded flowers are regularly removed. However, keeping some dried flower heads on the plants in fall will provide food for wintering song birds. Dried seed heads also add interest to the winter garden. This is an especially compact selection, with masses of single white flowers, each with a yellow center. Excellent for cutting. Also great for edging, or in mixed containers. Removing faded flowers will greatly increase the blooming time. Divide plants in the spring every 2 to 3 years to maintain vigour. Shasta Daisy is a well-behaved garden hybrid and should not be confused with the weedy Ox-eye Daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare).
