Description

Platycodon grandiflorus ‘Mariesii’

Balloon Flower
USDA Zone: 3-9
Balloon Flowers are summer-blooming cousins to the more familiar Bellflowers. This selection forms a compact mound of green foliage, bearing inflated buds that open into star-shaped single bright violet-blue blossoms. Especially good choice for containers, rock gardens or for edging. Remove faded blooms to encourage fresh buds to form. Because they come up very late in the spring, consider planting tulips or daffodils beside the clump to mark the location. Division is seldom necessary, and not always very successful because of the carrot-like root.

This selection is medium to tall, with flowers of deep violet-blue held on unusually dark stems. Remove faded blooms to encourage repeat flowering. Excellent for cutting. Drought tolerant once established. Also tolerates heat and humidity. Plants may be easily divided in early spring or fall. Can be clipped back hard after blooming, to rejuvenate the foliage. Attractive to both butterflies and hummingbirds. Winner of the 2000 Outstanding New Perennial Award by the International Hardy Plant Union. Plants form a clump of large, jagged-edged green leaves. Purplish black stems rise above in summer, bearing long spikes of bright-yellow daisy flowers. Superb for the back of the border, or at the waterside. An unusual centerpiece for a tub or large container. Both the flowers and leaves are great for cutting. Slugs can be troublesome. Clumps may be divided in the spring, every 3 to 4 years. Starting in mid-spring shortly after Hellebores are finished booming, dainty light periwinkle blue flowers cover a low, mounded habit. After the flowers fade, you can enjoy its dark green leaves that are lightly sprinkled with silver. This plant will thrive in part shade to full shade as long as you provide moisture. Pulmonaria is an underused perennial that grows well in shady gardens. It is especially attractive when planted among hostas, ferns, and brunneras. Its flowers are among the most brilliantly colored blossoms of all perennials. They form stately spires of flowers in early summer, over a mound of deeply cut green leaves. This selection features tall spires of vivid blue, semi-double flowers each with a white bee or center. Excellent for cutting. Trim back spent stems to the base to encourage repeat bloom later in the autumn. Be on the watch for aphids, slugs and powdery mildew, all common problems with Delphiniums. Staking the individual flower stems in June as they begin to elongate is wise, to help avoid wind damage.
