Delphinium elatum Aurora Deep Purple

Aurora Delphinium

USDA Zone: 3-9

The AURORA series of Delphinium offers excellent uniformity and hybrid vigor with flowers tightly packed on sturdy stems. They form stately spires of flowers in early summer, over a mound of deeply-cut green leaves. This selection features tall spires of royal purple, semi-double flowers each with a white bee or centre. Excellent for cutting. Trim back spent stems to the base to encourage repeat bloom later in the autumn. Be on the watch for aphids, slugs and powdery mildew, all common problems with Delphiniums. Staking the individual flower stems in June as they begin to elongate is wise, to help avoid wind damage.

Echinacea purpurea ‘PowWow Wild Berry’ Purple Coneflower USDA Zone: 3-9 A distinctive selection from PanAm Seed Co. of the Purple Coneflower, one of our most popular native wildflowers. Plants form a midsized mound of coarse dark-green leaves, bearing large daisy flowers with magenta-pink petals surrounding an orange-brown central cone by midsummer. Beautiful companion to E. purpurea ‘Pow Wow White’. Coneflowers are sturdy and easy-care perennials that perform best in a sunny location. Flowers are very attractive to butterflies. Outstanding for cutting. Removing faded flowers regularly will greatly increase the blooming period. Leaving dried seed heads on the plants at the end of the season will provide food for wintering birds and add interest to the winter garden. They’re also useful in dried arrangements. Plants may be easily divided in early spring. Any seedlings that appear can also be moved at that time. An All-America Selections Winner for 2010. This grass performs well in a wide range of climates, remains attractive for months on end, and is not invasive in any way. Clumps are strongly upright, with dark green leaves. Soft feathery green plumes appear in summer, maturing into stiff wheat-colored spikes, which last into winter. May be used in large groupings towards the back of a border, but also very effective when used more as a single specimen. Hardy enough to survive in containers or tubs in most regions. Clumps may be easily divided in spring. Trim to the ground in March. Plant habit is well-branched, strong and bushy. Ideal for sunny borders and growing in mixed containers. Attractive to butterflies. Excellent for cutting. Coneflowers begin blooming in midsummer and continue for months if faded flowers are regularly removed. Part of the CONE-FECTIONS™ series bred by Arie Blom of the Netherlands and introduced by AB Cultivars/Plants Nouveau. USPP#21022: unlicensed propagation prohibited. Registered with COPF. This midsized selection has full plumes of deep cherry red, over a bushy mound of elegant, lacy green leaves. Also thrives in tubs or mixed containers. Fertilize in April and June. Excellent for cutting. Seed heads may be removed or left on the plant for winter interest. Plants should be divided every 2 to 3 years, in early spring. May tolerate full sun in cool summer regions.
