Feather Reed Grass
USDA Zone: 3-9
Selected as Perennial Plant of the Year for 2001. This grass performs well in a wide range of climates, remains attractive for months on end, and is not invasive in any way. Clumps are strongly upright, with dark green leaves. Soft feathery green plumes appear in summer, maturing into stiff wheat-colored spikes, which last into winter. May be used in large groupings towards the back of a border, but also very effective when used more as a single specimen. Hardy enough to survive in containers or tubs in most regions. Clumps may be easily divided in spring. Trim to the ground in March.

Blanket Flower
USDA Zone: 2-9
Blanket Flowers are valuable for their very long season of bloom. This selection blooms profusely even in the first year, forming a low, compact mound. Flowers are large flame-orange daisies with golden-yellow tips, appearing from June into the autumn. Thrives in hot, sunny sites. Attractive to butterflies. Drought tolerant once established. Not the best choice for heavy clay soil that will stay wet through the winter. Removing faded flowers will encourage constant blooming. An All America Selections and Fleuroselect Gold Medal winner.

Carpathian Bellflower
USDA Zone: 3-9
This bellflower is considered an improvement on the older ‘Clips’ series displaying excellent vigour and blooming up to 4 weeks earlier. Plants form a low, cushion-shaped mound of small green leaves, with loads of upfacing, open blue bells appearing in late spring through late summer. Will continue blooming for weeks if spent blossoms are regularly removed. Excellent choice for the rock garden, edging and in containers. Performs especially well in regions with cool nights during the summer. Plants should be divided every 2 to 4 years, in spring or fall. Prefers good drainage.

Shasta Daisy
USDA Zone: 4-9
(Formerly Chrysanthemum maximum) No sunny border would seem complete without the familiar presence of Shasta Daisies. This is a very tall selection that exhibits excellent tolerance to summer heat and humidity. Flowers are large single white daisies with a yellow eye, valued in the garden and excellent for cutting. Divide plants every 2 to 3 years to maintain vigor. Removing faded flowers regularly will greatly increase the blooming time. May require staking if grown in rich soil. Attractive to butterflies.
