blue false indigo
Baptisia australis, commonly called blue false indigo, is an upright perennial which typically grows 3-4' tall and occurs in rich woods, thickets and along streambanks from Pennsylvania south to North Carolina and Tennessee. It features purple, lupine-like flowers in erect racemes (to 12") atop flower spikes extending well above a foliage mound of clover-like, trifoliate, bluish-green leaves (leaflets to 2"
long). Blooms in spring. Flowers give way to inflated seed pods (to 2.5" long) which turn charcoal black when ripe and have considerable ornamental interest. Seeds rattle around in the blackened pods which were once popularly used by children as rattles. Stems with seed pods are valued additions to dried flower arrangements.

The Perennial Sages are invaluable perennials for their rich display of spiky flowers in the early summer border. This selection is medium to tall, with flowers of deep violet-blue held on unusually dark stems. Remove faded blooms to encourage repeat flowering. Excellent for cutting. Drought tolerant once established. Also tolerates heat and humidity. Plants may be easily divided in early spring or fall. Can be clipped back hard after blooming, to rejuvenate the foliage. Attractive to both butterflies and hummingbirds. Winner of the 2000 Outstanding New Perennial Award by the International Hardy Plant Union.

Blanket Flower
USDA Zone: 2-9
Blanket Flowers are valuable for their very long season of bloom. This selection blooms profusely even in the first year, forming a low, compact mound. Flowers are large flame-orange daisies with golden-yellow tips, appearing from June into the autumn. Thrives in hot, sunny sites. Attractive to butterflies. Drought tolerant once established. Not the best choice for heavy clay soil that will stay wet through the winter. Removing faded flowers will encourage constant blooming. An All America Selections and Fleuroselect Gold Medal winner.

Hybrid Coneflower
USDA Zone: 5-9
A new series of Coneflower bred to produce well-branched, sturdy and compact plants featuring a high bud count. This selection produces very large, single flowers with hot, orange-red overlapping petals surrounding a large brown cone. Ideal for sunny borders and growing in mixed containers. Attractive to butterflies. Excellent for cutting. Coneflowers begin blooming midsummer and continue for months if faded flowers are regularly removed. However, keeping some dried flower heads on the plants in fall will provide food for wintering song birds. Dried seed heads also add interest to the winter garden.
